The End of Shark Week

Well, that’s the end. No more sharks, no more weeks, and especially no more sharks weeks. To commemorate our achievement, I give you three pictures of sharks:

Sharks in Film

Sharks have been a popular antagonist in film, whether it’s as a minor villain that sparks plot events such as in The Most Dangerous Game or 20000 Leagues Under the Sea, or as the primary antagonist in such films like Jaws and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

And so, as you can see, sharks are a staple in the film world, as is evidenced by Jaws, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and Megalodon. Thank you.

Henceblog Exposé: Shark Finning

Approximately 38 million sharks are harvested for their fins every year. The sharks unlucky enough to be finned by fishers are still alive when captured, and still alive when they’re thrown back into the ocean without fins. These sharks either die of suffocation or are eaten up by other sharks.

Despite the best efforts of many nations shark population has dropped 80% over the last fifty years, with most of it attributed to shark finning. The shark finning industry is worth roughly 1.2 billion US dollars, and has perhaps added many species of shark (including the Basking Shark, Great White, and Whale Shark) on or near the endangered species list.

Shark Finning is an international problem, and the best weapon against it is knowledge. Because Knowledge is power.

How to Make Shark Fin Soup

This week is about sharks, this blog is about… cooking? Well okay, this blog is about cooking. So, in celebration I will tell you all how to make Shark Fin Soup.

Shark Fin Soup is made the same way any soup is, I suppose: Boil up some broth and ingredients, add some sharks’ fins, mushrooms, and other items to add flavor. The main difficulty with this soup is its titular ingredient: The Fin of a Shark.

The Fin is first removed from the shark, and then processed by removing the skin and trimming down to shape. After this the fin is left out to dry for a while, but before this hydrogen peroxide may be added to give the fin a more appetizing color. If you are purchasing a shark fin from a marketplace you can purchase it in two different forms: Frozen or dried. The frozen fins are ready to be cooked after an hour of soaking/thawing, the dried fins take a longer time for preparation what with more soaking (for the fins to regain moisture) and then further preparation in the cooking process to add flavor and texture.

Maybe there aren't mushrooms.

And yet how safe is this soup? Isn’t it inhumane to cut the fins off sharks for a specialty soup enjoyed mainly for its “exotic” nature? Join me tomorrow as I dig into the dangerous and underground trade of shark finning.

Shark Week: The Legend of the Basking Shark

The Basking Shark was first discussed by Johan Ernst Gunnerus in 1765 under the name of Squalus Maximius. From there, specifically during the magical times of the late 1800′s, the basking Shark drifted into the realms of Cryptozoology.

As seen in Harper's Weekly in 1868.

The Stronsay Beast (a creature decribed as having three pairs of “wings” and approximately 55 feet in diameter) has been hypothesized as an unusually large Basking Shark, the Zuiyō Maro (also known as “New Nessie”), and (the only one of these examples actually from the late 1800′s) The “Wonderful Fish” seen in an illustration above.

Don't worry, it's only a gigantic sea monster with a horrifyingly big mouth.

The Basking shark is the second largest shark in the world, second only to everyone’s favorite Whale Shark. Like the whale shark, the Basking shark is non-aggressive and a filter feeder. The Basking shark has few predators, but has been known to be attacked by Orca Whales and Tiger Sharks and is a symbiotic partner with the lamprey.
